Mexico City, 19 May 2026 – The Tech4Nature Mexico project, a flagship initiative under the global partnership between the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Huawei, has received the Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM Award for Social Impact. Presented by the GSMA at M360 LATAM 2026, the award recognises the project’s contribution to biodiversity conservation through the responsible use of digital technologies to protect jaguars in the Dzilam de Bravo Nature Reserve, Yucatán.
This recognition highlights the strength of the Tech4Nature partnership, which brings together IUCN, Huawei and a coalition of local partners—including the Government of the State of Yucatán, C Minds, Yucatán Polytechnic University (UPY), and the local community of Dzilam de Bravo—to scale innovative, data-driven approaches to conservation.
Launched in 2022 and currently in its second phase, Tech4Nature Mexico demonstrates how cross-sector collaboration and responsible digital innovation can generate tangible outcomes for both people and nature. The initiative integrates artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and connectivity solutions with community-led monitoring to strengthen the protection of the jaguar (Panthera onca), an iconic and endangered species critical to ecosystem balance in the region.
Through the deployment of 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic monitoring devices, the project has recorded over 147 species, including 40 that are endangered. Notably, AI-enabled systems have identified 16 individual jaguars, generating critical insights into their behaviour, distribution and habitat use. These data are informing conservation planning and supporting evidence-based decision-making, including at the policy level.
Huawei’s cloud-based infrastructure enables the processing and analysis of large volumes of ecological data, including more than 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings. These technologies enhance the efficiency and scale of biodiversity monitoring, while supporting a broader shift towards data-driven conservation models.
Importantly, Tech4Nature Mexico places strong emphasis on community engagement and inclusive governance, ensuring that local stakeholders play a central role in conservation efforts. This integrated approach has contributed to measurable landscape-level impact, including the expansion of the protected area from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares.

The award was presented during M360 LATAM 2026, which convened leaders from across the technology ecosystem, mobile networks, governments, and connected industries to debate how to harness the power of technology – and work towards a better future for all. The GLOMO LATAM Awards celebrate the changemakers that redefine technology, connectivity and social advancement in the region. The award for the Tech4Nature Mexico project recognises the solution for its innovation and ability to generate significant social and environmental benefits for Latin America.
As part of the global Tech4Nature partnership, this project contributes to IUCN’s broader efforts to harness responsible, inclusive digital innovation to advance scalable solutions that can support credible progress towards global biodiversity goals.
